Identification clues

Its deep black colour and smooth, glassy lustre can resemble a polished piece of dark bottle glass.

Obsidian is natural volcanic glass formed by rapid cooling; it is a mineraloid, not a mineral crystal.

Handle chipped or broken edges carefully because conchoidal fracture can produce extreme sharpness.

Look a little closer

Study the smooth, glassy surface. Compare its appearance with Black Onyx, but do not rely on black colour alone to distinguish them.
